February 2022 Fanfic Recs

Here are some of the fics I enjoyed in February:

MDZS/CQL Fanfic Recs

closer than my hands have been, Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian, 5k, explicit
Sometimes, Lan Wangji gets jealous. Sometimes, Wei Wuxian enjoys it.

the earthquake in the room
, Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian, 39k, explicit
"Pop some bread in the toaster for me?” Wei Ying asks. Lan Zhan has one, a chrome thing with dials and buttons.

A pause. “This isn’t a relationship,” Lan Zhan says.

Wei Ying blinks. It’s such an incongruous thing to say. At first his brain says, that must be code. It’s almost like listening to two spies talk in a drama. The handler would say something like ‘the duck swims at midnight,’ and the spy would say, ‘purple is the loveliest colour’ and they’d both nod to each other and know that the prime minister was about to be assassinated, or something. That’s all he can think of, at first. Because of course this isn’t a relationship? This was a fun night. So Lan Zhan must be saying this for a reason. There’s some response he’s supposed to make now, but he’s lost the script if he ever had it.

“Okay…” he says. Then it clicks. Lan Zhan means: you should leave.
---
Maybe Wei Ying shouldn't have hooked up with his hot neighbour two days into his exchange semester, but everyone makes choices in life.

in defense of lightning
, Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian, 15k, explicit
“Wei Ying,” Lan Wangji says again. His blood is buzzing in his ears, a rush like the ocean and maybe, terrifyingly, like hope. “What did you think I meant?”

“I thought,” says Wei Ying. He falters. “I thought,” he says, unblinking, still staring at Lan Wangji’s shoulder, “that you meant. You. You and me.”

Taste For Gold
, Lan Xichen/Jin Guangyao, 4k, explicit
Jin Guangyao breathed a sigh of relief, then looked up to see Xichen looking down at him as if he wanted to devour him. It was heady and intoxicating and just a little intimidating, so he could hardly be blamed for what he said next.

"Do it, then," he said, raising an eyebrow as if in challenge as he slipped his hand into Xichen's. "Take me away."

Jin Guangyao issues a challenge, and Lan Xichen more than delivers.

Word of Honor Fic Recs

Sign of Spring, Zhou Zishu/Wen Kexing, 7k, teen
"Your fans are quite the poets, A-Xu. Did you know? One of them wrote on her blog: They just don't make skaters like Zhou Zishu anymore. His step sequences are like swift-moving clouds. Each edge and turn has an almost god-like elegance. Truly unforgettable."

The eye roll that gets him is practically audible. Nevertheless, Zhou Zishu glides over when Wen Kexing offers him a water bottle.

"I know that's you on your side blog," Zhou Zishu says after he's capped the bottle and tossed it back. "Nobody else would write shit like that about me."

Not anymore, he doesn't add, but Wen Kexing hears it anyway.

[FS AU] Zhou Zishu is one of the most decorated skaters of his generation. Wen Kexing has spent his whole life chasing him.

Beyond Evil Fic Recs

This month I watched Beyond Evil, a twisty and gripping Korean thriller about police corruption and a cold case that gets revived after 20 years when new victims are discovered. It's available on Netflix and Viki here in the US. Though not a BL drama, the two male leads have some pretty intense chemistry, so I was not surprised to discover a small but thriving slash fandom when I headed over to AO3 after finishing the show. 😆 Here's a couple I enjoyed so far:

The Very Next Day, Lee Dong-sik/Han Ju-won, 7k, explicit
Han Juwon needs a place to hide out. Lee Dongsik is very accommodating. And a little bit in love.

A post-canon "let's fuck about it" fic with Nasty Tenderness/Tender Nastiness (tm)

What Isn't The Grave, Lee Dong-sik/Han Ju-won, 9k, mature
The house had yellow walls and pale wood trim in all the rooms. The floors were linoleum, except the bathroom and the kitchen which had tile. Juwon cleaned the bathroom sink and the mirror every day with wipes, even though Dongsik didn’t leave much to clean. He only shaved every other day at most, and would rub raspily at his chin when his stubble got too long. Juwon would have hated the sound if it was anyone else. Instead he found the soft scratchy noise inoffensive, like the whir of wheels on an exercise bike.

Juwon moves in unannounced.

Happy reading!
