What I Watched in 2024
2022 | 2023 (Jan to June) | 2023 (July to Dec)
I was planning to do a more detailed media recap like 2022 and 2023, but scrolling through my Letterboxd and TV Time is mostly reminding me that 2024 was not a very successful year of media watching for me. Although I watched some stuff that was objectively quite good, I didn't watch much that gave me any level of joy, and nothing that gave me any significant fannish feelings.
Movies
In approximate order from earliest to latest:
Mean Girls (musical) - I enjoyed some of the songs, but I thought the girl who played Cady Heron was badly miscast and there were some bafflingly bad choices in the lines they cut out or changed. I can't remember a single change that I thought was an improvement on the original.
Damsel - Definitely a tense watch, although strayed too close to torture porn for my taste at times
12 Angry Men - I've been meaning to watch this for years and finally did (on a plane of all places) and it was the best thing I watched all year by a mile.
Wedding Season - I remember thinking this was fairly cute but not much beyond that
The Miracle Club - Terrible, and such a waste of a great cast
Challengers - 2nd most enjoyable movie I watched all year
Killers of the Flower Moon - Objectively good but soul-crushing
Holiday in the Wild - I watched this without realizing it was a 2019 release and was briefly extremely confused about why 2020 involved no masks. We watched a bunch more cheesy holiday movies in Nov/Dec, but I kept falling asleep in the middle of them, so unfortunately I don't have enough to say about any of them to include.
Firebrand - Great performances (especially Jude Law, who was revolting to a degree I would have scarcely thought possible), and very good at capturing the terror of having to stay in the good graces of an increasingly capricious and murderous autocrat, got messy at the end in a way that was completely ludicrous from a historical perspective, which was a tad annoying
I don't keep track of rewatches, but one of the ones I remember from this year was When Harry Met Sally, which was also on a plane and which resulted in a rather interesting conversation with my seatmate about a project he was working on with the National Comedy Center in memory of his late wife.
TV Shows and Dramas
Shogun - Objectively very good, but all the suicide (voluntary, forced, desired) got to me after awhile the same way the rape in Game of Thrones was eventually Too Much, I fell asleep for a bunch of the finale and am not sure I care enough to go back and rewatch
The Great British Bake-Off - Seasons 14 and 15, sparked the most actual joy of probably anything else on this page, despite some judging decisions I disagreed with. Thank god for Alison. I drive my kids crazy by commenting nearly every episode (sometimes several times per episode) how much better she is as host than Matt, and how much better Noel is by association.
9-1-1 - Watched seasons 1-3 in full, and currently working on 4. I started it hoping to get in on some of the Eddie/Buck action over at AO3. It hasn't happened yet, but the show is enjoyable despite the frequent copaganda. The budget is IMPRESSIVE - L.A. has been struck by multiple spectacular natural disasters with movie-level special effects just in the first three seasons and I'm rather curious to see how they can possibly top them. The firefighters problem solving some of the tricky saves is often my favorite part of the show.
King the Land - Checked it out due to how much I loved Junho in Good Manager, DNF'd at episode 5, may or may not try to finish it
Cherry Magic (Thai) - The issue with broadcast rights interrupted my watch and I never got back to it, but it is on my list to return to, I was enjoying it.
Kidnap - Same as above, except my viewing got interrupted by an overseas trip instead of broadcast rights shenanigans
My Country: The New Age - Aka Daddy Issues: The Show. In progress, watching with my spouse, who wants me to give a particular shout-out to Bang-won. It's good, but another one that's a bit exhausting so far with how things just constantly go from bad to worse for the characters you like.
Rewatches included lots and lots of Derry Girls, because my kids like to put it on as background noise.
Hopefully next year will involve some stuff I'm more excited about.
