Shipping Meme
I saw this going around Twitter and thought it would be fun to answer some of the questions.
1. List 3 shipping tropes you love
Friends to lovers is my most frequent shipping pattern, I'm a sucker for sharing a bed, and I'm very fond of clams.
2. List 3 shipping tropes you don't love.
Any of these can be redeemed with really good writing, but in general:
Jealousy - I enjoy a little bit of possessiveness, but when it crosses over to jealousy and suspicion, it ruins the relationship for me. Trust is too important in healthy relationships.
Miscommunication - just like above, there's a balancing act to perform: I love pining and a little bit of miscommunication is often involved in that, but beyond a certain point it gets to be Too Much and makes me doubt if there's any hope of a healthy relationship if the characters seem incapable of holding a conversation without misunderstanding each other.
Love triangles - UGH. For god's sake, somebody google polyamory!
5. Multiship or Monoship?
Occasionally I run into a couple where I struggle to imagine them with anyone else, but most of the time I cheerfully multiship.
6. Rarepairs or mainstream?
Both! I love juggernaut ships because there's so much to read and they usually attract a lot of talented and creative writers, so I'm always happy when my favorite ships line up with what's popular in the fandom, but as a multishipper, I love exploring different outcomes and dynamics, too, so I end up with a lot of rarepairs as well. I have a few ship tags favorited on AO3 that get only a handful of new fics a year.
7. Polyamory or monogamy?
Again, both is good. The majority of fics I read are about couples, but I enjoy threesomes and the occasional foursome or moresome as well. When there's both a canon het ship and a non-canon slash ship I like, I often prefer to go the OT3 route with them, e.g. Peter/Neal/Elizabeth from White Collar, Steve/Bucky/Peggy from the MCU, or Lin Shu/Xiao Jingyan/Mu Nihuang from Nirvana in Fire. There's also some poly ships I like just because I'm interested in the dynamic or think it would be hot, e.g. 3zun from The Untamed or Wen Kexing/Zhou Zishu/Han Ying from Word of Honor.
8. If the ship is physical, reversible or not?
I'm not 100% sure what this means, but I'm guessing maybe top/bottom dynamics? I headcanon most of my favorite m/m ships as switches and don't usually have a strong preference about who's pitching and who's catching, but Wangxian is a rare exception where for some reason I struggle to get into anything but top!LWJ/bottom!WWX. 🤷♀️
I sadly find dicks hotter than dildos, so I tend to prefer non-penetrative sex acts in f/f fics (although there are exceptions, like the two f/f Wangxian fics I recced the other day) and male tops in m/f fics, but the female character topping from the bottom can be a fun way to switch it up a bit even if the male character is still the one doing the penetrating. Just as with m/m ships, I usually have more fun not limiting myself to one dynamic!
9. Do you always have romantic ships for fandoms?
For fandoms I regularly read fic in, almost always. The main exception I can think of is Supernatural, and that's mostly because I'm not into any of the popular slash ships in that fandom, but even there I read various het rarepairs.
10. How important is the sexual part (if any) of your ship?
Hmm, fairly important, I'd say. I happily read fics of all ratings and some of my all-time favorites are rated G or T, but if I could special order myself the perfect fic, it would be plot with porn for most, if not all, of my favorite ships. I read lots of porn without plot for most of them, too.
11. Opinion on platonic ships?
I don't necessarily miss platonic relationships if there aren't any in a fic (especially if the fic is short PWP or slice of life), but much like smut vs plot, if I could special order my ideal fic, it would have well-written platonic relationships in it as well as a good main romance. A lot of my all-time favorite fics have platonic relationships that are equally, and in some cases even more, important than the romance, e.g. a life without sun (teen, 30k) which has great depictions of Jiang Cheng's relationships with Wei Wuxian, Jiang Yanli, Lan Xichen, Jin Zixuan, and his parents as well as the Wangxian romance. I love pure gen as well, and will happily read it if it catches my eye, but in most fandoms I'm less likely to seek it out than fic for my OTPs.
12. List three ships you currently love.
Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng/Wen Qing (I mostly read it as a side pairing, so I don't have a tag for it yet, but I adore them), Lan Jingyi/Lan Sizhui
13. List 5 OTPs from past fandoms
Steve/Bucky (MCU), Remus/Sirius (Harry Potter), Kirk/McCoy (Star Trek AOS), Cesare/Lucrezia (The Borgias), Kara/Lee (Battlestar Galactica)
14. Opinions on the importance of marriage?
Eh, it's nice when it fits the story, but not necessary. Several of my favorite ships have catchphrases that are basically unofficial wedding vows already, e.g. "I'm with you to the end of the line." It's the commitment that matters, not the ceremony.
15. Opinion on OC kids?
Generally not my thing, although I would have said the same of kidfic in general before I met A-Yuan and now I read it regularly, so never say never. I do have the occasional OC child-related headcanon that I enjoy finding reflected in fics, e.g. Jin Zixuan and Jiang Yanli wanted a big family and would have given Jin Ling a small army of sweetly mischievous sisters if they'd lived, and Jiang Cheng and Wen Qing would have had several daughters as well, though in their case less sweetly mischievous and more straight up terrifying.😄
