2023 Fic Tracking Stats

I use a spreadsheet to track my fanfic reading, and here are my 2023 stats!

Stats from previous years:

2022: Mid-year | Year-end
2021: Year-end

I recorded reading a total of 366 fics in 2023, compared to 406 in 2022. This includes everything I liked enough to finish reading, plus a few WIPs and most longer full rereads, but not partial rereads or fics I started reading but DNF'd. You can check out some of my most-reread fics of the year here.

After a pretty slow spring and summer and a dismal September, I'm pleased that my reading picked up again a little bit towards the end of the year. At the beginning of October, I set the goal for myself of reading at least 365 fics in 2023 so I could average one per day, and I succeeded, but just barely, squeaking past that target somewhere around 4PM on New Year's Eve. 😅 ( Read more for total wordcount, top fandoms, top ships, and top tags )

General Fandom Stats: Characters Tagged With Alpha/Beta/Omega on AO3

An Army friend of mine sent me this tweet this morning knowing that I like fandom stats. It's a reaction to this TikTok video. I thought it was hilarious that all seven members of BTS are among the characters most often tagged as omega on AO3, and was immediately curious to see what the corresponding alpha list looked like. (Spoiler: all seven members of BTS are ALSO among the characters most often tagged as alpha on AO3. 😂)

Toastystats has done some omegaverse stats in the past, but none very recently, so I decided to see what the current picture looks like. I decided to re-do the same omega tag search as the TikTok OP to make sure I had the latest data, and to check the alpha and beta character tags as well. However, I'm not a statistician or anything, so there's no fancy graphs.

2022 Mid-Year Fic Reading Stats

I was going to post this on July 1st, but then I spent July 1st in a tent in the woods, so that was fun but not exactly conducive to anything requiring internet or a laptop. I posted some end of the year stats for 2021 last year and plan to do the same this year, but because I am a nerd, I thought it might be kind of fun to see how things look mid-year for comparison purposes at the end of the year.

2021 Year End Fic Tracking Stats

December 2020 was the first month I read MDZS fic and I thought it would be interesting to see how much I read in the first flush of fannish enthusiasm, so I used a spreadsheet to keep track of everything I read. Turns out, I read 1,004,141 words in a little more than two weeks and had enough fun tracking it that I decided to keep a fic reading spreadsheet for the whole year of 2021.

Here are my 2021 results:

I recorded reading a total of 848 fics in 2021. This includes everything I liked enough to finish reading, plus a few WIPs and most full rereads, although it doesn't include partial rereads or fics I started reading but DNF'd.

848 fics in one year is way, way more than my average, which is probably typically closer to 1-3 fics per week and has, in my going-on-two-decades in fandom, occasionally been closer to 1-3 fics per year. Really goes to show the impact a new fandom (or three) can have!( Total wordcount, top fandoms, and top ships )
