Reccer's Notes: This is courtesy of a rec in
cathexys' journal. It's another fic told through snippets from invented social media posts across about ten years, following the development, within the universe of Heated Rivalry, of hockey rpf fandom, mainly focusing on Hollanov (Ilya/Shane). It's extraordinarily well done, and although the story of Shane and Ilya's decade-long love affair is the core thread, the real tale is of the rpf fandom, specifically a few devoted fans. The poignancy and brilliance of this fic is the portraits it paints of fanwriters and young fans, immersed in the fandom while they grow and develop, moving through their own life stages and dramas while posting about the hockey players they love, especially Hollanov. And in the end, of course, the Hollanov truthers are resoundingly vindicated. The formatting makes it clear that we're seeing posts on tumblr, livejournal, AO3, Reddit, Twitter, etc., with different types of fandom on each platform. Hilarious and touching, this is a wonderful read, and the details are meticulous and very funny.
PS: It may help to know in advance (as these may be hockey rpf terms with which I was unfamiliar) that 2481 is code for Hollander/Rozanov (their jersey numbers), and 2435 is Hollander/Pike. Some details in the fic will probably only make sense if you've read the books.
PPS: Also, there's a fictional recs list by "ice knives" partway through, and I want to read ALL OF THEM!
Fanwork Links: Love Takes Miles (read it in creator's style if you can, for the formatting)

I put out water for the birds.

Animation Check-in: 🌪 Ninjago S6E6-8

Episode 6: Cole's explanation for why some call boats etc 'she' was sweet, at least the non-joking one lol
The Pirates of the Caribbean and Tremors references. X'D
Nya used Airjitzu!
Waait Ronin is good again all because of the bottle message Jay sent? I still won't forgive him, he knew the boys were innocent from the start.
Episode 7: Aww, let Zane speak pirate too!
"If he's within earshot, he has to grant the wish" I feel like they could've done something with that sooner. Couldn't someone have wished that their friends were freed?
Was the sky-fall a reference to Spirited Away?
Episode 8: Zane's father built another Zane??
Lmao at the seagulls watching the chess game and the cleanup robot cheating.
Shouldn't Zane #2 have wishes too? Why didn't they use him to say the wish?
Okay so Nya really did like Jay, I guess she just buried it until now.
Eww Nadakhan didn't really kiss Nya right??

It was very cold this morning, a few Blue Jays, House Sparrows and Squirrels were early visitors, followed by a Tufted Titmouse and 2 Deer.
We're expecting snow tonight, 3 to 5 inches are possible.

2025 Favourites
In no particular order. This is content I've read and watched in 2025, not necessarily content released in 2025.
Books
1. The Moonstone Covenant by Jill Hammer: f/f/f/f heroic fantasy. This standalone novel about four wives investigating the death of Olloise's parents and ending up in the middle of a political plot is beautifully written, like old-school fantasy.
2. The Sky on Fire by Jenn Lyons: f/f/m heroic fantasy. This standalone novel about a team having to steal a dragon's hoard has an amazing plot and fun characters.
3. On Silver Shores by VT Hoang: m/m urban fantasy with an intersex protagonist. This novel about a half-siren detective and an analyst investigating rebel werewolves gave me intense feels.
4. Sugar & Vice by Allie Therin: m/m murder mystery/urban fantasy. This series about an empath and a specialist investigating murders in a world where empaths are tracked down has the slooooo~west burn.
5. Letifer by TD Cloud: m/m murder mystery/urban fantasy. This novel about a human cop and a vampire enforcer secretly teaming up to investigate serial killings is perfect for fans of Vampire: the Masquerade and Kindred: the Embraced.
6. Five to Love Him by Alexa Piper: m/m urban fantasy. This novel about a hive's mate has the most adorable fluff, as well as a couple of very hot sex scenes. I love stories about beings who have one consciousness and several bodies.
7. [French] Ainsi soient-illes by Auriane Velten: urban fantasy where angels are agender and use écriture inclusive (gender-neutral language) probably invented by the author + a trans female protagonist. If you loved the story of the manga Angel Sanctuary, go for this novel!
8. Everyday Aliens by Polenth Blake: collection of science fiction short stories with many non-binary characters. These brilliant stories are very experimental, told from the aliens' strange POVs, and are reminiscent of Bogi Takács's writing.
9. [Spanish] Herederas de Safo by AM Irún: f/f adventure. This novel about a museum curator and an insurance agent having to recover one of Sappho's amphoras is a nice mix of adventure, humour and romance.
10. The Ministry of Guidance and Other Stories by Golnoosh Nour: collection of contemporary short stories with some f/f, m/m and bi f/m. These modern, even rebellious, stories offer a daily look at the Iranian culture.

WayV (22 November, AsiaWorld Expo, Hong Kong)
Another show where I did not know the group well, but had a good time even if I was not converted to stan-dom.
We had soundcheck with our tickets so we got to see the group perform a few songs and have a little banter. Ten and Yangyang had a yaoi moment where Ten intently brushed hair from Yangyang's face - congratulations to them!
The show itself was fun. Although the layout was all flat, no elevation to the seats, we had a good view of the thrust stage and everyone exercised sensible phone etiquette (phones at eye height). The VCRs were all very gothic, with dark magic and vampires and moody lighting in a mansion. Overall I enjoyed the show more than I expected - they are an entertaining group and for me their songs were more enjoyable live than on record. I do like Ten a lot, but Xiaojun was also quite a stand out as a performer.
The ments were mostly in Mandarin, which I cannot understand, with some Cantonese from Xiaojun and Hendery, of which I could understand some but not all. They also showed a preview of their Winter album after the show, cue much excitement from fans.
It was quite interesting observing HK fan etiquette with freebies. They would really only give you a freebie if they were sure you liked that member. So
tullycat, with her Ten PC prominently displayed on her bag, got given lots of Ten freebies - whereas I got nothing until I hung my Kun soundcheck pc from my bag, at which point I started getting Kun freebies!
Unsurprisingly for a Hong Kong show, there were very few visibly Western fans. Also interesting, there are no bag size restrictions so many fans had MASSIVE bags stuffed with plushies (both fanmade and official), pcs, slogans, etc.

Yuletide and a few other things
So it seems I slept through the great deanoning of Yuletide, heh. Meaning that there was a glitch that revealed all the authors for a short while, soon after works reveal. I missed it, since I was too tired to read my gift right away on 24th, and didn’t even look at the Yuletide collection then.
I received a lovely and funny Meet You at the Blossom fic about my favorite threesome. This is basically Outsider POV fic even though the author didn’t tag it as such. But I love Ousider POV fics, and I enjoyed Que Siming’s sarcastic comments and Jinbao’s sweet cluelessness here a lot.
Throwing Flowers into the River (4,861 words)
Fandom: 花开有时颓靡无声 | Meet You at the Blossom (TV)
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Jin Xiaobao/Zongzheng Huai'en, Jin Xiaobao/Su Yin, Jin Xiaobao/Su Yin/Zongzheng Huai'en, Jinbao/Que Siming
Characters: Jin Xiaobao, Zongzheng Huai'en, Jinbao, Que Siming, Su Yin
Additional Tags: Weddings, Requited Unrequited Love, Polyamory Negotiations
Summary: Jinbao and his Miracle Doctor return to the Jin mansion for the wedding of Jin Xiaobao and Zongzheng Huai'en, but a light-hearted game played between the two of them uncovers a secret that could turn the entire wedding day on its head.
Apart from reading Yuletide fics, yesterday I watched Exhuma, that horror movie with Kim Go Eun I mentioned before. It was pretty good and Kim Go Eun was wonderful. And it was tense and gory, but goriness was on an acceptable level for me, so I didn’t even have to fast-forward.
I also started Yumi’s Cells, because I wanted something cute and fluffy after Exhuma. I watched an episode and a half, and it’s fine and amusing at times, but for now I’m not very emotionally engaged. I do plan to watch more though, because I’m still very much in my ‘in love with Kim Go Eun’ phase, and she’s so good, and sweet and pretty here.
I also watched the new episodes of Burnout Syndrome (very good) and Dare You to Death (rather meh). But wow, Joong and Dunk both look exceptionally beautiful in this drama, so for now I will be watching for this one very shallow reason. 😊
I also wanted to rec a Youtube vid with Dew, Gun, and Off’s reaction to episode 5 of Burnout Syndrome, because it’s very funny, and it made me laugh. More with the embedded vid behind the cut, because thumbnail images are spoilery for the last episode.
I enjoyed this vid so much. From Gun commenting about his and Dew’s height difference and saying “I literally only come up to his shoulders”. To the three of them arguing about who’s the biggest red flag in this episode, and both Off and Dew saying it’s Jira, because he fools and manipulates both Koh and Pheem. And to Off first getting hilariously jealous over Dew and Gun’s romantic scenes, and then cheering Dew on during the last scene. And all three reacted to the ending of this episode the same way all the viewers reacted: “That’s it? It ends like this? That’s so mean.” 😊

🎧 Audiobook Check-in: "Spooksville #1: The Secret Path"
Basic summary: Adam has just moved to the small town of Springville. His first day there, he meets Sally, who tells him the town’s real name is Spooksville because of all the spooky things that go on. Adam doesn’t believe her - until they go in search of the Secret Path, a magical path that leads to other Spooksvilles.
Join Adam, Sally, and their friend Watch as they take the Secret Path and pass through a dark doorway. On the other side you’ll find a terrifying Spooksville where there are huge spiders, living skeletons, evil black knights, and a witch who just loves to make dolls...out of kids!
My thoughts: Short and easy listen to at around 2 hours, I thought the part after they went through the gravestone was quite fun and the children missing parts of their bodies was spooky.
I kinda feel like the book was more for boys in the way Adam interacted with Sally but idk since I'm not that age anymore how I took it when I read it the first time.
I wonder if the characters in this book will be in any of the future books? They all take place in Springsville/Spooksville since that's the series name. Bum did say that depending on the person, you could end up in different places.
The narrator's voice was fine. I really like the cover of the physical volume I had:

CWs:
-Witches = bad/evil
-Children kidnapped and body parts taken (there's just skin where the parts were) - when the characters go back to free them, they're already gone and it's not certain if they made it back out and what happened to them after...
-Claustrophobic scene where Adam gets stuck in a hole in the tree
-Homelessness

My rating: 3.5/5
