Jin Guangyao Fanvid Recs
⚠ Spoilers for The Untamed and other adaptations of Mo Dao Zu Shi ahead
Jin Guangyao is a great villain - manipulative and amoral while also being extremely sympathetic in many ways thanks to the hardship and rejection he's experienced in his life due to his illegitimate birth. He has interesting and complex relationships with many other characters, most especially with his sworn brothers Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen (3zun), but also Nie Huaisang, Jin Ling, Jiang Cheng, Jin Zixuan, Su She, and Wei Wuxian himself. It's difficult not to wish for a fix-it where things might have turned out better for him, and, consequently, for everyone he hurt. One of these days I'll probably do a fic rec post with some of my favorite fix-its and redemption arcs for him.
Meanwhile, I've found lots of great fanvids exploring different aspects of his character and relationships. Here are some of my favorites.
⚠ Vids may contain spoilers, visual triggers such as rapid cuts or flashing lights, canon-typical violence, blood, etc.
First, a trio of three excellent vids that are all set to Taylor Swift songs, one character vid and two 3zun vids. Taylor Swift and Jin Guangyao is a match made in heaven, tbh.
Look What You Made Meng Yao Do
Ready For It?
Blank Space
Next, a powerful exploration of the NieYao side of the 3zun triad, set to a song by Zhou Shen (aka Charlie Zhou), who was one of the competitors in Singer 2020 alongside Hua Chenyu. I recommend turning on subtitles if you don't understand Chinese lyrics.
Ring My Own Doorbell
Followed by a sad vid about the Xiyao side:
Make It Holy
Next, no less than FOUR great vids depicting the conflict and parallels between Jin Guangyao and Nie Huaisang:
Start a War
Two Evils
Devil Devil
you're gonna go far
And another one that explores some of the parallels between Jin Guangyao, Nie Huaisang, and Wei Wuxian:
All My Friends
Finally, a short and funny remix of the Guanyin Temple scene with "Nothing Is Ever Anyone's Fault" from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend:
Guanyin Temple (Remix)
Happy watching!
