Wangxian Musician AU Fic Recs
I've had mixed success with musician AUs in other fandoms, but probably thanks to the canonical musical cultivation element, I'm really loving them in the MDZS/CQL fandom, especially classical music AUs. After reading yet another good one from the Wangxian Summer Exchange that went live a couple days ago, I decided to go ahead and make a post sharing some of the ones I liked.
All these fics have Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian as the primary pairing.
though a window, softly (14k, teen)
This was one of the first fics I read in the fandom, and remains one of my favorites. Wei Wuxian (flutist) and Lan Wangji (violinist) are graduate music students who play together from their balconies without knowing who the other is. The descriptions of their musical conversations with each other are delightful, and the author includes a list of the songs described in the fic at the end.
sweet music playing (16k, explicit)
This story is a lovely meditation on grief, loss, and yearning, as Lan Wangji loses his mother and then his Wei Ying and pours his feelings about both into his music. Don't worry, there's a happy ending! Also features: trees, bunnies, daisy chains, hair braiding
A capriccio series (23k, explicit)
The first fic in this two part (so far) series is short and funny - violinist Lan Wangji is woken up by his neighbor Wei Wuxian playing the flute at three in the morning and goes next door in his pajamas to ask him to be quiet.
In the second, they strike up a collaboration as LWJ helps WWX with his composing, and fall in love along the way. Like through a window, softly, the author included notes about the different songs and inspirations mentioned in the fic, and I had a lot of fun exploring them along the way and even learned some stuff. (Make sure you check out the toha video - it's very cool!)
Themes and Variations in F# Major (18k, explicit)
This enjoyable fic has Lan Wangji (pianist) and Wei Wuxian (flutist) reconnect as professional musicians after knowing each other slightly as children, and, similar to the A capriccio series, strike up a collaboration together while falling in love.
The Right To Care (61k, explicit)

This is a moving fic in which Lan Wangji is a musician and Wei Wuxian babysits a-Yuan, who is being abused by his other caregivers. The fallout after WWX reports the abuse splits them apart, but years later they reconnect via music.
Tempo Rubato (109k, explicit)
An ambitious modern Persuasion AU in which Lan Wangji gives up Wei Wuxian and his own musical dreams to help his family's prestigious school. Years later, he reconnects with both WWX and his love of music when WWX, now an IT security professional, is hired to handle a ransomware attack on the school.
