I offered some Beyond Evil (Korean title: 괴물) recs to a friend who watched it recently and it's a small enough fandom that I thought the easiest thing might just be to compile everything I liked so far into one post, so there's very little new here if you've been following my monthly recs, but if you stumble on this post from Dreamwidth search or Google or anything like that, hopefully it will be useful for you!

Beyond Evil Fanfic Recs

Beyond Evil might be a smallish fandom, but the average quality of writing is pretty high in my experience. It's well worth exploring the tag! Here, from longest to shortest, are some of the fics I've liked best so far.

boy, don't you know you're a hurricane?, Lee Dongsik/Han Juwon, 50k, mature

Summary: Han Joo Won can shake hands if he has to, if he’s very, very careful. It’s even possible, sometimes, to briefly hold a vision at bay. But he prefers not to risk it, unless it’s absolutely necessary. He prefers to simply not touch people at all.

(Or, Lee Dong Sik has a vision and saves Lee Yoo Yeon all those years ago . . . but somehow, reluctantly, Joo Won ends up his partner, anyway.)

Notes: Set in an AU where some people are born with supernatural powers. As a result, some things are fixed (Yuyeon lives, and I really enjoyed her characterization in this fic) and others are made worse. Angsty along the way, but a happy ending.

Summary: “Lee Dong Sik-ssi.” Joo Won’s voice has always been deep—surprisingly deep, it had caught Dong Sik off-guard the first time—but it sounds oddly deeper now. Dong Sik strains himself to catch his former partner’s words. “What are you doing.”

“Leading an investigation,” Dong Sik deadpans. “You haven’t been answering my calls.”

[or: the au where joo won turns into a vampire, and now dong sik has to deal with it. in a very lee dong sik-type manner, of course.]

if every house is haunted, Lee Dongsik/Han Juwon, 14k, general audiences

Summary: Joo Won, freshly showered and comfortably melting into his couch, is on his third of glass of wine when the text message comes.

Yah. I’m moving. Help out, Lieutenant Han.

Notes: Juwon tries to help Dongsik get ready to move and they both figure some stuff out. A really lovely and satisfying post-canon get-together fic.

worth waiting for, Lee Dong-sik/Han Ju-won, 13k, explicit

Summary: Healthy communication might be an unrealistic kink in this fandom but it's my kink nonetheless.

“Why are you doing this?” Joo-Won demanded.

“Doing what?” Dong-Sik asked, one corner of his mouth twitching into that damnable smirk.

Joo-Won searched for the words to describe what he felt like Dong-Sik was doing. ‘Prying into my personal affairs’ would have been good. ‘Being an obnoxious piece of shit’, also a strong contender. ‘Refusing to accept the fact that I don’t want you here, I don’t want you in my life, I don’t want anyone in my life, I don’t need anyone in my life, and all you’re doing is driving me to distraction at a time when I need to be focused’, he thought, was probably the most accurate.

Somehow what he wound up saying through gritted teeth was, “Staying.”

Notes: Dong-sik and Ju-won have their first time together after Dong-sik arrests Ju-won at the hearing, and then navigate their relationship through the rest of canon and post-canon

Summary: There’s blood underneath his fingernails again.

(Or, a traumatized Han Joo Won is losing himself. Dong Sik won't let him stay lost.)

Notes: Post-canon Han Ju-won whump, 'cause canon wasn't mean enough to him already.

What Isn't The Grave, Lee Dong-sik/Han Ju-won, 9k, mature

Summary: The house had yellow walls and pale wood trim in all the rooms. The floors were linoleum, except the bathroom and the kitchen which had tile. Juwon cleaned the bathroom sink and the mirror every day with wipes, even though Dongsik didn’t leave much to clean. He only shaved every other day at most, and would rub raspily at his chin when his stubble got too long. Juwon would have hated the sound if it was anyone else. Instead he found the soft scratchy noise inoffensive, like the whir of wheels on an exercise bike.

Notes: Introspective Han Juwon POV fic about his relationship with his father and the ways in which Lee Dongsik subverts his expectations. Great unreliable narrator - while poor Juwon is trying to wrap his head around Dongsik's Dongsik-ness, you as the reader get to enjoy Dongsik's stubborn efforts to tear Juwon's daddy issues out by the root and strangle them into oblivion.

Summary: After returning to Manyang, Ju-won navigates the ways bodies can interact. Dong-sik adjusts accordingly.

Notes: Navigating their relationship post-canon with introspective Dongsik POV

Gift Horse Dentistry, Lee Dongsik-Han Juwon, 5k, mature

Summary: Dong-sik is incredible in bed. Ju-won is furious about it.

Notes: Funny, somewhat cracky fic in which Juwon is convinced that Dongsik being amazing in bed on top of everything else is just too good to be true and creates some self-inflicted suffering for himself.

all the bad dreams that you hide, Lee Dong-sik/Han Ju-won, 4k, general audiences

Summary: Dong Sik smiles crookedly, and Joo Won wonders if nap is the right word used to describe whatever it was that he was in the throes of in that corner of the shop. Not that Joo Won takes naps himself either, but he thinks that they shouldn’t look so sad. Or be done in the most random of places

Notes: Very sweet

Summary: Han Joo Won has decided that he will not let go of Lee Dong Sik. It takes Dong Sik a while to realize this.

Notes: Gentle post-canon fic in which Dongsik is surprised to find Juwon quietly making himself part of Dongsik's life

to know it well, Lee Dongsik/Han Juwon, 3k, teen

Summary: Dongsik has an infuriating way of seeing right through him, as if everything he does gives away how much he wants -

What does he want?

He's spent the better part of the last year trying to figure out what he wants. Penance, atonement, absolution.

Summary: Juwon shivers. “Stop that,” he says, closing his hand around Dongsik’s.

Dongsik tilts his head, blinking up at him. “It’s 'stop this' and 'stop that,' isn’t it? What do you want me to do?”

Juwon reddens, further, at what he’d been hoping for. He doesn’t know what he was picturing—maybe a silent fuck, with no words whispered, but simply the mechanics of going through it, and then washing himself carefully and never talking about it again—but watching Dongsik now, he knows it’s going to be more complicated than that.

Juwon wants. This is what happens when he voices that desire.

Summary: Joowon hasn’t said much about work this week, which fits a pattern Dongsik has been piecing together. A few late nights, cases Joowon doesn’t want to talk about, and a sudden fit of self-denial in the bedroom. There are bad weeks in their line of work, weeks when nobody wins and you see things broken that won’t be fixed. Dongsik has seen worse ways of coping. So he makes noodles and doesn’t ask about Joowon’s day, and doesn’t comment when Joowon sits closer than usual on the couch.

Notes: One of my favorites, because of the palpable affection in Dong-sik's POV. I can 100% see Ju-won doing this to himself and Dong-sik reacting like this. Post-canon established relationship, Ju-won practices self-inflicted orgasm control, Dong-sik lets him suffer, until he doesn't.

Jigsaw Falling Into Place, Lee Dong-sik/Han Ju-won, 1k, explicit

Summary: There's a pressure at the base of Dong Sik's throat, surging of words, or maybe something that couldn't, shouldn't, be put to words at all.

Takes place within Ep 16.

Beyond Evil Fanvid Recs

Last year I mentioned I hadn't been able to find many Nirvana in Fire vids, and less than a month later seven new ones premiered at VidUKon, so I'm kind of tempted to do the same for Beyond Evil and see if it can happen again, haha. It's an emotionally intense drama with beautiful and atmospheric cinematography, I think there's a lot of scope for vidders to have fun with it! Meanwhile, I enjoyed these a lot.
