I love that the tv series approach to not being a gay romance was to make so much of it feel vaguely gay until well, clearly, that's just what "friendship" looks like in this world.

I agree. JGY is great as a villain, but he's the kind of villain I really wish could have been turned back from that path, so I enjoy fics where he and the people he hurts in canon get happier endings.
Most of them, anyway. JGY can still do a little bit of murder, as a treat. Wouldn't want to defang him completely, after all! 😁 ~sharpens knives for Jin Guangshan and Jin Zixun~
I have read the occasional Lan Xicheng/Jiang Cheng fic that worked for me -- mostly where JC can be sarcastic and gruff but still caring in a really practical, hard edges way.
There's so many fics for Xicheng (and some really great fanart, too) that I'd like to get into it, but they seemed so indifferent to each other in canon compared to Xichen's ... everything with JGY that I've found myself very picky about how it starts. If you can think of any that worked especially well for you, please feel free to toss them my way!
