Dec. 25th, 2025 05:12 pmAfterwards, we went to the library. I finished reading the book I'd borrowed, and she browsed for a while before picking out a pile of books and then flipping through them to decide what she wanted to borrow. I borrowed Butter by Asako Yuzuki, and it's the specific edition that I'd been eyeing in Shelfish ever since I worked there and wasn't allowed to read the books. (You know, when you're not allowed to do something you want to doubly do it.) Is the fact that the library had it a Sign? Anything's a sign if you want to give it significance. I'm healing, so it's a Sign.
Nikki had wanted to go to Spinebreaker or Shelfish initially. I told her that both places had traumatised me and that it was a long story. She thought I was joking at first, but I didn't want to go into the whole history of both places and why I wasn't welcome at either. I told her that it was awkward telling people that I was traumatised by bookstores because, when I tell them I was traumatised by school for instance, they instinctively understand, but when I say I was traumatised by bookstores, they think I must be joking.
The part I didn't tell her is that when people react like this, it feels like they're laughing at what I experienced or trivialising my hurt, even though they mostly don't know enough to react aptly in the first place. It's just such a difficult thing to talk to people about that I wish it never came up in the first place. The emotional labour of explaining it and making them understand the impact it had on me just sucks, as a process. For a while, I've been thinking that they can't understand me as a person without knowing this about me, but maybe this isn't as big a part of my self as all that. At one point it defined everything about the way I was, but thankfully that time is behind me. As the heroine of the manhwa Not Your Typical Reincarnation Story says, people heal with time and people are more resilient than they think.

Summary: Snake returns from Operation N313, lauded a hero and finds the latest shipment of Foxhound recruits already at the camp. Still struggling to sort out his thoughts about the mission, he finds his attention drawn to one rookie in particular, a scrawny, unassuming runt who can't seem to stay out of trouble.
Reccer's Notes: This just works so damn well as an alternate first meeting for these two! It's such a dismal, pessimistic setting - as expected with this canon - but the way these two forge a connection, finding some degree of comfort and caring and hope - makes me really emotional! And I love the use of the book, as well!

Manga primer: K-9: Public Security Bureau – Division 9 – Special Abilities Countermeasure
Dec. 25th, 2025 11:01 amIt was hard for me to figure out how to even start a promo post, because it only took one picture to get me to try it out:

...I didn't really ask any more questions after that. Bonus impact for stumbling on it in Japanese because the "kept pet" implied in the verb is lovely, and obviously plays with the K-9/"police dog" title.
Anyway, meet Oboro on the left - he's great - and Ren on the right - she's great. The art is beautiful, and everyone is very pretty.
About the world
Some people have special abilities, most of which are not well understood. Only one thing is known for sure: these abilities manifest after someone commits a crime. For example, the criminal from the first chapter is an arsonist and can control/become fire. (Somewhat unrelated, but this is pretty fun coming in from the Boku No Hero Academia world, because it's like a universe in which only bad guys get a quirk.) Here, these abilities are called "sins." In the Japanese, it's simply the kanji for crime with "sin" written in katakana beside it.This seems pretty simplistic at first glance, but that slowly changes as we drill deeper into the worldbuilding and learn the nuances of these abilities and how they manifest. The implications are deeply fucked up, with often devastating consequences that I'm totally here for as my heart gets shattered again and again.
The story premise
Our plucky detective Ren is selected to join Division 9, a newly created division that pairs a detective with a sin user in order to fight fire with fire -- what could possibly go wrong?! I love her. She kicks so much ass.
So, who's our main cast?
( Short character profiles )
TOGETHER THEY FIGHT CRIME! More specifically, crime related to sin users. But they also get their asses kicked and handed over to them quite a bit, haha.
( A bit more on the story and on them )
Where to read? How many chapters are out?
( 37 chapters, 3 volumes. Totally possible to catch up in a reasonable amount of time! )SVSSS: blood, leave no stain by Boomchick

Length: 4,491
Creator Links:
Theme: Amnesty, Established Relationship, Hurt/Comfort, Magic, Mythical Creatures: Demons, Non-Sexual Intimacy, Spells & Curses, Trauma and Recovery
Summary: Luo Binghe's healing powers falter in the shape of the wounds Xiu Ya once gave him. He does the only logical thing--HIDES IT.
Shen Qingqiu knows something is wrong with his husband, but finding out what is going to hurt...
A sweet little post-canon fic about healing, plotted with and illustrated by the incredible Falcities for the SVSSS Gotcha for Gaza
Reccer's Notes: This is such a sweet, thoughtful fic! Binghe always tries so hard to be strong, and never really quite escapes the trauma reaction that he doesn't deserve help or that suffering is just something to be endured. In this post-canon fic, his husband gets the opportunity to tell him otherwise and show him just how much he loves all parts of him, including the demonic parts!
It also has quite possibly my favourite (and very appropriate to the themes!) no beta tag ever: No beta but we live regardless

Length: 3,248
Creator Links:
Theme: Amnesty, Character Development, Domestic, Happy Endings, Hurt/Comfort, Time Travel
Summary: Luo Binghe had suffered through numerous life-changing revelations since waking up on the floor of the woodshed. First he had thought he was dead and a ghost, then he'd been informed he was in the future, then they'd tried to tell him that he was a demon. But still, the most unbelievable thing this strange future version of his shijie had tried to convince him of was that he was married to their shizun.
Reccer's Notes: This was written for the prompt 'Time Travel - Character discovers future self is apparently happy in the MOST unlikely relationship', and truly I cannot think of a better canon ship for that than this pair 😄 This is so sweet, and baby Binghe's POV is so perfectly young and hurt and yearning and protective-instincts-inciting...! And then the canon couple themselves are just so very sweet and perfect... <33 Such love!!!

Dec. 24th, 2025 08:00 pmsock - nyjer seed - goldfinches and the occasional junco
platform feeder - safflower seed - house finches and cardinals (the cover is too low for the doves)
squirrel-proof column feeder - mix of safflower and black oil sunflower - house finches, chickadees, sometimes a nuthatch. I get woodpeckers when I use a better mix of seed (downy and red-bellied, occasional hairy).
ground - safflower and sunflower - mourning doves, juncos, cardinals, squirrels. Saw some goldfinches there today.
I should get some suet.
I just received a feeder/webcam as a gift. I'll have to figure out where to put it. I want to put it on the side of the shed, but I'm not sure it gets wi-fi signal out there.

best 4 last
Dec. 24th, 2025 05:02 pmhonestly this may have been my favourite of the four. it has less plot than book 2 - and i know lack of plot/stakes was my primary complaint about the first and third books, i know - but there is that lasting tension of, what are all these characters hiding? is speaker's sister alive? what will pei decide about her relationship? when will the station's operations resume? etc, etc. so like it felt like there was stuff going on and chambers didn't just immediately spit out a bunch of facts and go "here's my world, look at it!".
a thing i thought this book did well: the akarak! and more broadly, the idea of what does it mean to be othered? to be exiled, or to choose to live separate, or to go outside of your traditional cultural norms? but especially the way the conflict between speaker and pei was handled and also? chambers noting that many akarak kids are born disabled in some way because of the conditions they were conceived in. that's interesting to me as we know from displaced/disenfranchised human populations that yeah, that's some bad shit that can happen! that's what happens when you destroy somebody's home!
a thing i thought this book did less well: pei's whole deal. i didn't feel like you needed to have read book 1/be familiar with ashby to understand what was going on here, which is good, but - and maybe my perspective is shaded by the fact that i'm someone who does want children - but what it means to choose to not be a parent is different on a species level? like because the aeluons reproduce so differently i'm not sure that the comparison and moral chambers is trying to draw here actually resonates. and honestly the way that it's framed - hanging around humans makes pei more human, therefore, she doesn't have to reproduce - makes it seem like oh yeah, human behaviour and human morals actually is the gold standard for this society, which i'm less than about. i wish there had been maybe a more culturally specific reason for pei to not want to mate. but again i want kids so maybe that's just me

Birdfeeding
Dec. 24th, 2025 01:38 pmI fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.
I put out water for the birds.
EDIT 12/24/25 -- We hacked up most of the remaining brushpile in the parking lot, and some of the older one by the driveway, feeding those into the chipper.
EDIT 12/24/25 -- We moved the new mulch to the mulch pile.
EDIT 12/24/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio. As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Dec. 24th, 2025 01:13 pmCupcakes: frosted!
Bags: packed!
Garbage: taken out!
Dishwasher: running!
Me: showered, dressed, and waiting for my ride!
Whew!
It is all done and packed and only the last anxiety-inducing part - waiting for the car and schlepping everything down to the car - is left.
There were ZERO frosting explosions this year, though I did need to re-whip the strawberry buttercream, so I left it for last. There are still a bunch of stuff in the sink to be washed on Friday, but all the containers that...contained frosting are in the dishwasher, so they won't be all gross upon my return.
I did miscount and make one extra package of cupcakes, so I just addressed it to Baby Miss L - I'm sure her parents will love that. 😉 Also, the last gift I ordered for her - very late - is allegedly going to be delivered today! It's the 30 second dance party button! Which looks so fun and since I know Baby Miss L loves a dance party, it seemed like fate that I should get it for her.
I have only been skimming ye olde flist, but once I'm back home on Friday, all obligations are met and the next week is mine to do with as I will, so I will try to be more present here.
Merry Christmas to those who are celebrating! Happy Yuletide to those of you participating! And happy hump day to everyone else! See you on the flip side!
