oops! all pirates

isunshowerso remember how back at the beginning of june i decided to watch one piece the anime for a guy? yeah. i'm about 60 episodes in now (by episode number, i skipped ten because i got given the filler list by a different friend) and a weird thing has happened. I Actually Kind Of Enjoy It.
i'm not sure what it is. if it's the ensemble cast everyone has childhood trauma of it all. if it's the honestly pretty intriguing worldbuilding of "world that is mostly ocean and sometimes people get superpowers". if it's just that i really needed something to watch and i happened to get told to watch this at the right time. or what. but like. actually i am enjoying it. i'd watched the live-action on netflix already and really enjoyed it, but i don't really watch animated tv generally and the anime is. okay. if anyone is reading this who isn't familiar with one piece as a concept. it's a thousand episodes long and has been running longer than i've been alive and it's STILL GOING. so obviously i was originally like "im not watching all that" and then later, like, "i will watch a few episodes because This Guy likes it and then probably stop once i get bored" but the thing is, dear reader(s), is that i'm not bored yet. i got to a natural stopping point recently (the point up to which the live action adaptation stops, ish) and was like hmm i'll watch something else for a few days so i don't totally burn myself out.
and then what did i watch? treasure planet. YES it just happened to be on hulu but YES i picked it because it was also pirates. (space pirates this time.)
my latest nefarious plot is to find the wherewithal to, like, run a tabletop game again and set it in a world that's mostly water and has a thriving pirate culture. and then invite The Guy to play the game (explicitly pitching it as "yeah i watched this anime you said you liked and it would make good tabletop") and like some of my friends i guess--i have other friends who really like this anime so like--and then, idk? i hate running games though, it stresses me out and i feel like i'm not very good at it, but maybe that just means i need practice, iunno. anyways did you know that The Ocean
actually this post is NOT "all pirates" because i also want to add that the past week i've been really good about cooking meals for myself that don't come out of a cardboard box and yield leftovers that i can take to work. i made risotto last week. and pancakes. and iirc TWO pasta dishes and those even had VEGETABLES in them. i bought FROZEN PEAS at the grocery store like an ADULT. how fucked up is that (i'm very proud of myself for this actually this is a life goal i've had for several months)

Birdfeeding

I fed the birds. I've seen motion but the windows were too wet to identify anything.
EDIT 7/19/25 -- Yay, the window dried up enough to see through! Sparrows, house finches, and a mourning dove are mobbing the feeders.
EDIT 7/19/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.
EDIT 7/19/25 -- I potted up 2 cherry plums and a white peach.
EDIT 7/19/25 -- I added more potting soil to several pots that needed it.
Fireflies are coming out. Cicadas are singing.
I am done for the night.

Time to find out what I remember...
Catra is having nightmares about opening the portal and she's pushing people away. Looking at the wiki, Catra attacked Entrapta and then sent her to Beast Island, then lied to Hordak blaming Entrapa for the princesses destroying the portal, but a message did make it through to Horde Prime.
Oh noo what happened to the real Flutterina? :(
I hate that the only confirmed non-binary char is evil, I like Double Trouble's design.

Two my favourite coworkers were there, and another came through to buy her groceries, and told us about some weird health life hacks that she swears by. And there were two more employees there, because they had some of s doing a cleaning frenzy since they have an inspection tomorrow. And finally, Blue and his parents came by and we chit-chatted and had fun! And the five of us employees were laughing and joking and having a great deal of wacky fun, especially as the hour drew late, partially because there were less customers and partially because, as I've always said, delirious exhaustion is the best high.
(Not that I have any other references except for laughing gas when I've had fillings. That stuff screws me up--a couple years ago they put me on it and within ten minutes I was telling the poor hygienist about this girl on Dr. Phil who claimed to be pregnant with the second coming of Christ. Anyways, I've always wondered, what does it feel like to be high or drunk?)
And that's about all for tonight. I need to go to bed!!!!!!!!!!! And hopefully not be so exhausted next week.

Hood River

Our destination for day 2 was Hood River. We loved this spot, both because of the view and the convenience of its location, parking and our rooms over the breakfast area.
This photo was the view from one of our rooms. It was not only a pretty view but one that changed all day long, as people at the inlet end point took kayaking, paddleboard and canoeing classes. I'd never seen a motorized paddleboard before but they were in use too, along with jet skis out on the river and parasailers.
We also got to watch birds diving for food, and trains and cargo barges go by on the river. We even saw a cruise ship once!

Jul. 18th, 2025 08:12 pmmusesfoolI mentioned I've been reading a bunch of DCU/PJO crossovers, and mostly I like it when nobody is related to the Waynes and no Waynes are secretly demigods and it's just Percy et al in Gotham and rolling with their weirdness (or vice versa, I guess, but I haven't seen any like that yet), though I have enjoyed those other types. For me, the big key to making the crossover work, aside from the fact that I want it to so I'm primed for it (i.e., buy the premise, buy the joke), is how Wonder Woman is handled (and to a much lesser extent, Wonder Girl), even more so than Aquaman and Atlantis.
Like, for me as a reader, you can't pretend that the Batfamily is totally ignorant of the Greek pantheon or demigods if you've got Diana around. And I realize that some folks are basing their Batfamily stuff on other people's fic (I'm not making that call - some of them state it outright in their notes), which may not contain any info on Wonder Woman or the Amazons etc. but Wonder Woman is not an obscure superhero! Even if you ignore the retcon that she's a daughter of Zeus (and you should! Even the comics have walked that back, though I can see why it might be interesting to work into this kind of crossover), she was made of clay and had life breathed into her by Greek goddesses.
I mean, it complicates things to some degree, because where was she during all of Percy's adventures, but 1. she was in space/another universe etc., or 2. she'd been stripped of her powers for trying to help, or 3. she was back on Themyscira, and unaware, or, or, or... And those are just off the top of my head. Mostly I've seen Percy and friends angry that she didn't participate and that's a fine way to go, but like, I feel like something has to be said, even if just in passing, unless it's set very very early in Batman's career and he hasn't met her/she isn't public yet. And the ones I've found so far are not set in that timeframe, because the fun of the crossover is having all the kids interacting with each other and with Bruce.
Anyway, I'm always interested in how other people make crossovers work, because for me, skipping over most of the nitty-gritty of trying to make incompatible worlds/magical systems etc. work together is the way to go - choose one or two details to set the vibe and handwave the inconsistencies.
