July 2022 Fanfic Recs

Here are some of the fics I enjoyed in July. Vegaspete kind of ate my brain this month, but there's also at least one each for MDZS/CQL, Bad Buddy, Beyond Evil, Semantic Error, and Hawaii Five-0.

MDZS/CQL Fic Recs

covered, Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian, 9k, explicit

Lan Zhan shuts his eyes in exasperation. Lan Huan’s “Head Up and Heels Down,” shirt is confusing enough to the average person without being actively suggestive. (Every time Wei Ying sees it he proceeds to sing, “Heels down, head up, that’s the way we like to fuck!” under his breath, so the line for “actively suggestive” is… mutable.) He can’t imagine the kind of top stampede his extremely gay brother would cause by going out of the house in a t-shirt announcing, for all intents and purposes, his desire to be the star of an orgy. He tries very hard not to picture either the stampede or the orgy.

“Why would you even want sixteen hands between your legs, anyway?” Wei Ying asks the room at large, sounding genuinely curious. “What would they do? I feel like at a certain point there’s, like, diminishing returns, right?”

Ah. The mental image of Lan Huan’s Top Stampede has been replaced with a mental image that is both better and worse: Wei Ying as the centerpiece of a nine-person orgy.

Gentle Exile, Lan Xichen/Song Lan, 9k, explicit

The first letter Song Zichen writes to Lan Xichen starts like this:

I had enough of solitude.

It takes two weeks of quiet coexistence, morning hellos and evening good nights and notes on bits of paper consisting of ‘yes’-es and ‘no’-s and ‘thank you’-s, until Xichen works up the courage to ask:

“What brought you to the Cloud Recesses, Song-daozhang?”

Song Zichen looks up from the book he’s not reading, pulls out a sheet of paper, dips his brush into ink and starts writing.

Semantic Error Fic Recs

I thought I'd recced some Semantic Error fic before, but apparently not? It's a cute and funny university-set Korean BL show with good chemistry between the two leads. It's not groundbreaking in any way, but knows what it's doing and takes its familiar storyline and tropes and executes them with style. It's free on Viki.

Hawaii Five-0 Fic Recs

I only watched the first season of the 2010 Hawaii Five-0 remake and dropped it after I hated something? (I can't even remember what it was) that happened in the last episode or two of season one. I was mostly in it for the fic, anyway, which was surprisingly good for such a silly show. I thought the fandom had pretty much died years ago, though, and I hadn't read a new H50 fic in ages, so I was surprised when this brand new fic popped up in my inbox from rageprufrock. It was a fun little trip down memory lane.

On Three, Steve McGarrett/Danny Williams, 21k, teen

The first time Danni meets Steve McGarrett is when EMTs haul him into her ER under extreme duress, having just driven a police cruiser onto a ship.

Kinnporsche Fic Recs

I think I got most of these recs from bnrlibrarian on Twitter. Vegas Theerapanyakul is kind of his own warning, and a bunch of these fics involve BDSM practices that rarely exceed 1 out of 3 for "Safe, Sane, and Consensual", so please read the tags if you have any triggers or squicks!

The more he thinks about it, the more he thinks Pete really should show them. Everyone would benefit.
