Q1
Here's five of my favorite K-pop songs that released in April, May, and June 2024:
⚠️ for flashing, rapid cuts, and other physical triggers in many of these videos
IVE - HEYA
As I've mentioned before, IVE is my favorite 4th gen girl group, so I was looking forward to this comeback. The first time I listened to the song, I did not like the opening, and I was just starting to think, "what a shame, I guess every group has to have a few misses" when the chorus hit and I went "oh no, that's so catchy" instead. I don't think it's in the same tier as my favorite IVE songs like "I AM" or "After Like", but by the time the final chorus kicked in, I was sold. It ended up being my most played song of May. I liked several of the B-sides pretty well, too.
Yuqi - Could It Be
I've enjoyed several of Yuqi's solo songs a lot, so I was looking forward to her new album, too. I didn't like "Freak" very much at all, but thought "Could It Be" was very pretty. "Red Rover" also managed to get thoroughly stuck in my head.
ONF - Bye My Monster
I loved the use of strings in this. I liked the B-side "Slave to the Rhythm" a lot, too.
BADVILLAIN - BADVILLAIN
I checked this group out mostly because they're Taemin's new sisters at BPM (and one of them has worked as a backup dancer for him before), but ended up really liking their debut. The songs are otherwise not similar, but just as with "Bye My Monster", I liked the use of strings to give it a more epic feel.
BIBI & Jackson Wang - Feeling Lucky
🥵🥵🥵
Honorable mention: Red Velvet - Cosmic
This song only came out five days ago, so it's still a little early to declare it top five for the quarter, but unless recency bias is affecting me a lot more than I think it is, I think there's a good chance it will end up one of my top songs this YEAR. Like IVE's "HEYA" above, it's got a beautiful chorus that captured me immediately, and in less than one week, I've already played it so many times that it's tied for my 3rd most-played song in June.
Honorable mention: Eclipse - Run Run
Eclipse is a fictional band from the Kdrama Lovely Runner. I haven't seen the drama, but I did enjoy several of the songs created for Eclipse, especially "Run Run":
I also liked these great covers of "Run Run" by Zerobaseone and Dohoon from TWS.
I have some more honorable mentions, but I think most of them were popular enough songs that they'll do well in
paradisediner's polls, so I'll talk about them later.
And speaking of
paradisediner, big thanks to them for their New Music Mondays posts that make it super easy to both find new music and remember when it was released!
Other Music I've Been Listening To
My most-played non-K-pop song lately has been Blinding Lights, by The Weeknd, because 4 billion+ streams on Spotify apparently isn't enough. 😂 (Seriously, though, I do like the song.)
Some older K-pop songs I've had on repeat this quarter:
Happy listening!
