Well, I am still in a K-pop phase.

Top 5 Artists

According to Spotify, I listened to 1800 artists this year. My top five were:

1. Taemin (2023 ranking: #2)
2. ATEEZ (2023 ranking: #5)
3. SHINee (2023 ranking: #1)
4. ONEWE (2023 ranking: n/a)
5. Red Velvet (2023 ranking: >5)

SHINee and Taemin were #1 and #2 last year, but this year SHINee didn't have a comeback and Taemin did (plus I was still listening frequently to "Guilty" from his comeback at the end of 2023, as you will see below), so Taemin beat his own group this year for the #1 spot.

ATEEZ moved up to #2 after a very busy year with multiple Korean and Japanese comebacks, but they actually didn't get a comeback boost so much as a concert boost - I went to see them on their US tour this summer and they were fantastic live, so naturally I ended up listening to the concert setlist again and again (plus a bunch of other favorites that they had to leave out) for months afterwards.

As I mentioned in my Q1 K-pop recs, I got into ONEWE at the tail end of last year and they were love at first listen, so I had them on near-constant repeat all year, too, and am not at all surprised that they made it to #4 this year.

Red Velvet is one of the groups my daughter really liked in her K-pop phase, so they were one of the groups I occasionally listened to before getting more seriously into K-pop, and have listened to much more since. They jumped up to #5 this year because I lovedlovedloved their 10th anniversary comeback "Cosmic". It finished the year at #11 in my top songs and was my third most-listened-to 2024 release, after "Horizon", by Taemin (who is Taemin), and "BIBORA", by SF9 (which had a six month head start).

Top 5 Songs

According to Spotify, I listened to 3833 unique songs this year. My top five were:

1. Guilty, by Taemin
2. Rain to Be, by ONEWE
3. Universe_, by ONEWE
4. Strangers, by Taemin
5. End of Spring, by ONEWE

The only one of these that's even a slight surprise is "Strangers" and it's not that I didn't listen to it a zillion times this year, it's just that I also listened to a bunch of other Taemin songs a zillion times and I wouldn't necessarily have guessed that "Strangers" was the one that got a zillion and one listens lol.

Overall, Taemin had 17 songs in my top 100 songs of 2024, more than any other artist. From the rest of my top 5 artists, SHINee had 11 (top song: "Juliette", which was a bit of a surprise, I'd have guessed "Dream Girl" this year), ATEEZ had 8 (top song: "Cyberpunk"), and ONEWE and Red Velvet had 5 apiece (top songs: "Rain To Be" and "Cosmic", respectively, as discussed above) in my top 100 songs.

Honorable Mentions

SF9's "BIBORA" was a huge hit with me at the very beginning of the year and stayed on my playlists frequently enough to make it to #9 in my most-listened-to songs of 2024. 2024 was the year I finally dug into A.C.E and Day6's discographies more and became a fan, so they had four songs apiece in my top 100 (top songs: "Callin'" and "Welcome to the Show", respectively). I also started listening to TAN after their excellent "Hypertonic" comeback, just in time for them to disband. πŸ₯² ONF and &TEAM had two more boy group comebacks I especially liked this year with "Bye My Monster" (those strings!) and "Aoarashi" (that chorus), plus Ten released his first EP, which I really enjoyed (top song: "Lie With You"). Finally, my beloved Key (top song: "Tongue Tied") and Seventeen (top song: "Super") also had multiple spots apiece in the top 100 songs.

On the girl group side, IVE continued to be a regular presence in my playlists with both older and newer songs (top song: "HEYA"), and I also particularly liked "Love Attack" by RESCENE and "Imaginary Friend" by ITZY of 2024 girl group releases, plus Rosé's very fun "APT." with Bruno Mars. Of older gg songs, "LA DI DA" by Everglow and "MAGO" by GFRIEND each barely missed out on a spot in my top 10 songs, at #12 and #13 respectively.

In non-K-pop, I got into Chappell Roan, like everyone else on the planet (top song: HOT TO GO!"). I also discovered KEiiNO in a TheBiasList global pop roundup and QNTAL in my never-ending quest for "stuff that sounds like Loreena McKennitt", and listened to a bunch of both (top songs: "Spirit in the Sky" and "Vedes Amigo", respectively). As I predicted in my 2023 Spotify Wrapped post, Vesna also got a couple entries into my top 100 songs this year (top song: Běžela jsem lesem).

Happy listening!

1800 artists!!! WOAH I aspire to be like you, I wanted to broaden my musical horizons this year and it went, hm, how do I, it went out of the window :''')

ONEWEEEEEEE I absolutely adore them, their vocals are incredible (so far I'm only listening not stanning, but when the wooooooo guy does his woooooo? Ah, my soul floats up into the clouds) and I am always ready to embrace an actual band. Speaking of bands, have you tried checking out Xdinary Heroes? Tonally they're definitely rowdier than Onewe, but their stuff hits emotionally (something that I've been sadly missing from Ateez's titles) and isn't overly saccharine (like I unfortunately found the Day6 albums post-Demon :(()

I actually went to check how's Taemin doing on my artist list, and he's actually right under Onewe! Great company. I wasn't as obsessed with Horizon as I was with She loves me, she loves me not (both my top tracks from his recents), but it was still a Very good mini and I'm looking forward to what he bestows upon us next πŸ™

A l s o somewhat unrelated but somewhat re: concert boosts, man I really wish kpop artists released albums with concert mixes of their songs! I mean they do, sometimes, but you can hear the crowds and it's not as satisfying. There's a youtube channel that posts concert versions of Ateez songs, I think they're remaking them?, and I was GOBSMACKED by how good some of them are! I remember being head over heels in love with BTS's ON:E concert mixing of... Dionysus, I think? I'd love to listen to those remixes, much more than I'm interested in "slowed down" and "sped up" versions that artists are so fond of releasing nowadays :')

Aaaaa I was using lastfm years ago too! I even tried logging into my old account, but it seems it's been purged lol. Pity, I'd love to see all the anime/vocaloid music I used to listen to 24/7 :') But also!! That's still impressive as heck, I've made my account in December last year (just in time to loop the fuck out of Ateez's Will) and had a couple of phases where I'd just listen to spotify's genre playlists, but I'm still at 964 artists... I wish my music taste was more diverse, but branching out is a bit tiresome for me OTL

I think the first Onewe song I've ever heard was The End of Spring, and then similarly I found the "Rain to Be" album and fell in loooooove. I love how they can be both dramatic and happy/silly ("Veronica"! πŸ’—) And of course I loved the OFF ROAD single, all three tracks were a delight. ROCK MUSIC MY LOVE.

XDH MY LOVES their first couple of releases were wonderfully, hmm, how to put it? Wacky? Eccentric? They made you think "oh, whoever made this certainly loves Tim Burton's movies" lol. I gotta say I prefer their later music which lost a bit of that kooky style but gained in passion! Livelock is my beloved album of theirs, I can honestly recommend every single song on that album with special recommendation of "Freddy", "Bad Chemical" (the synths are Evil) and "PLUTO", which never fails to tear my chest open in the final chorus! Deadlock (technically the earlier album) is great too, it also explores different feelings without losing a cohesive sound -- I particularly like "Freakin' Bad", "Bicycle", and "Good enough". They released their first full album this year, and it's yet another top to bottom bangerfest (that sounded dirty.) -- "No Matter", "Little Things", "Money On My Mind", "until the end of time"... "Night of Fireworks" has almost Onewe-y lightness to it hehe. And then there's LIVE and FALL, and half of the mini is pre-release singles, but my faves are "LOVE and FEAR", "FEELING NICE" and "Boy Comics". Aaaaand that's how I ended up recommending you half of their discography, sorry ^^;;;;;

I'm not as well-versed in Taemin's discography but every once in a while I find something I haven't heard before that stays in my brain for a good couple days and refuses to leave lol ("Heaven"!). I also just realized I never gave a listen to Bones, and I told myself to check it out! Recently I've also gave a listen to someone's "SHINee BEST" playlist, and found Jonghyun's "Just for a day" -- what a lovely gem!

Ohh man I really hope "Guerrilla" will be in next year's concert setlist because I am EAGER to break that wall lol;;; Now that I think about it, Ateez remixes (the old ones on the Japanese albums in particular) are so good... Of course, Japanese "Utopia" with its guitars is a classic (to me.), and so is "Aurora", but "Promise" and "Say My Name" with Park Juwon's guitars, or the ones off the Halazia single? GENIUS. I'm listening to the concert version of "Stranger" now and ahhhh it really hits different!
