My latest favorite K-pop releases! Thanks as always to the mods at
paradisediner for making it so easy to check out new music (and remember when it came out for these compilation posts)!
⚠️ for flashing, rapid cuts, and other physical triggers in many of these videos
For opinions on a bunch more 2024 K-pop releases, please see my 2024 K-pop list on RateYourMusic!
Without further ado, here's my top five (alphabetical order by title):
APT. by Rosé and Bruno Mars
Too much fun! I've been playing it nonstop since October.
Bones, by Taemin
I saw someone on Twitter describe this as "unhinged, possibly criminal yearning" and it's so true. Classic Taemin, in other words. It was released as an OST track for a dance show and never received a music video, but does have this beautiful dance performance to go along with it:
Home Sweet Home, by G-Dragon (feat. Taeyang+Daesung)
I'm not a VIP but I love enough BIGBANG songs to be thrilled to have them back after so long. Their surprise reunion at MAMA had an amazing crowd reaction - the screaming when "Bang Bang Bang" started up must have nearly raised the roof.
Imaginary Friend, by ITZY
Suuuuper pretty. Has some very cool choreo as well.
You by KAVE
I'd never even heard of this band until this video popped up on my radar thanks to Kpopalypse, but their main vocalist is really good. I also liked "Stone".
Honorable Mentions:
Bonus kudos to Chung Ha for managing to put out an actually fun Christmas song.
Other stuff I've been listening to
Ten older K-pop songs I've had on repeat this quarter:
I also want to give out a shout out to this beautiful cover by D.O. (EXO) and Lee Soohyun (AKMU) of "Rewrite the Stars" from "The Greatest Showman".
In non-K-pop listening, I've been a Vienna Teng fan for years and years, and "Never Look Away" (linking a favorite Yuri on Ice fanvid set to the song, since I'm overseas again and the official upload seems to be geoblocked on Youtube here) is one of my all-time favorite songs, so it's not like she's ever disappeared from my playlists, but I was listening to a lot of her these last few months, particularly "Lullaby for a Stormy Night". Paul Simon (with and without Garfunkel) is another singer I've been a fan of forever - literally my entire life, in his case, since my dad was a huge fan and I grew up listening to him - and I've had his "Graceland" album on repeat a lot as well.
I've also made some recent discoveries. Swapping Spotify top fives with some friends introduced me to "Harpy Hare", by Yaeklokre, which has been on repeat ever since. And I stumbled on Viivi... somewhere. I don't remember where, maybe some random Spotify playlist I was checking out? But anyway, I really liked “Ihana kipu” in particular and have been playing it a lot, too.
And finally, lots of Christmas music! Like many families, mine has a favorite Christmas album: Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song".
Happy listening!
